Video Games and Discrimination

| Sunday, July 19, 2009

What’s good everybody, there are a few things that I want to address about my online gaming experience. Some people feel that in today’s society racism and discrimination are not as bad as let’s say 50 years ago. In some instances that may seem to be true but one very appalling thing I noticed while playing video games online is the amount of racism and discrimination in the Xbox live community. In online gaming racism is alive and well the only difference with online gaming is the people online have no problems speaking there minds. I guess the reason behind the gateway to open communication is because there is a slim chance that a lot of these people will never meet their targets of ignorance. The thing that really amazes me is that it’s not adults saying these negative things it is the children. They are the majority online playing video games. One night I was playing Grand Theft Auto and as I was leaving the match I said goodnight and blessings to everyone, out of the blue this kid (I am assuming he may have been younger than 15) starts to scream racial slurs for no reason. The main question is where are they learning these trends of racism and hatred from? I would have never thought someone could get mad over a game of Uno, it’s just Uno. If I am playing Uno online and I win a hand, someone comments I hate black people they win at everything, they have basketball, football, taken over golf, the Mexicans have soccer, and both Mexicans and Black people have taken our white women. These are just a few examples of racial discrimination that I have experienced but I feel bad for women and young girls as well. Women are either getting disrespected, spoken to like call girls, kicked from games for being a female or not given a chance to show and prove skills because “girls don’t play video games.” I’m tired of preaching that’s just my two cents, I am working on a project to help the online gaming experience. More details to come soon.

I just ignore that scene,if people can't be proper and good to their fellow man..no reason to give them any of my time. I don't ever come into a room stating i'm a girl and my gamertag doesn't point out i'm a girl either which is a good thing. :) thing is if people don't fuel the fire they want to start it doesn't go anywhere. I have friends of all colors and it gets pretty heated but they end up shutting up. Sorry you are having a hard time. :(

I feel you. I don't get on much but when i do I most def hear that noise. its the facts of life. racism with all ways be a proplem even if the president is black white yellow or green. people will always feel superior to another person for any reason they can think of. especially when hiding behind a microphone.

im with u.... i cant stand hearing young male white kids say shit like that... the only reason i can think of is that the n word is kind of becoming on of those "banned cuss words" type deal. like parents or people saying U SHOULD NEVER SAY THAT! which gives them more of a blind inclination to say it in situations where it might make them look cool or what not... im definitely positive that racism is still being taught in all different race households, especially white people from rural areas who don't understand anything or one that hasn't been in their town for 200 or more years, and some towns that still secure the views of 200 years ago when there were different races around (not just black, but our ever forgotten Chinese racism especially around Colorado, which coincidently is still heavy religious WASPs). So it seems that the views of racism have not quite ceased mankind... and might not for a few more centuries to come... maybe until mankind faces another form of racism via species or what not. i guess another form of hate :D. cause humans sure love hate dont they?

Thanks for your feedback, you are so right people do love to hate. The reason why people hate is because they hate there situation. I had no idea about the situation going on in Colorado, that is something clearly not publicized. Thank you for the information and have a blessed week. Peace

well Asian discrimination is one so under-taught and ignored, probably because in Asian culture to acknowledge such travesty would damage their concept of "face". but since Asian and American cultures have fused from immigration and 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generations coming into the world, more people are fighting for Asian-American rights/grievances. But this group still does not have their own Jesse or Al Sharpton. But as a little history lesson... where West-African and Caribbean slaves seem to "fail" in the opinion of the white man, new labor had to be reconfigured... and a new way to entice "American Dream" victims was born. The "indentured servant" was first targeted to Chinese Americans... and after the Trans-continental railroad was finished, they were mercilessly deported or arrested to be sent back to their "corrupt and culturally damaging non-progressive emperor". Then other Asians were solicited just the same... Japanese... Korean... Filipino... etc. They came in waves and were all fighting back East which made racism within Asian groups even more disgusting in America, which is also probably why Asian discrimination is so commonly missed. Most groups tried to conform to American-likeliness because they had been sent to America by their own country as "good favor" for future American reliance. These "indentured servants" were often mistreated more harshly than when West Africans and Caribbeans were gruesomely sent on ships to America. They were also "paid" but the debt to actually get to America was astronomical, just like coyotes today promising Mexicans new lives in America. But this did not stop groups from immigrating... the chances of the "Gold Rush" were way too tempting, and most Asian cultures save so much money limiting daily hygiene and needs that they do end up with a huge surplus in spite of extreme poverty. So chances were favorable, but in actuality life was sub-par... sub-human... and yet they miraculously survived and thrived like their other slave counterparts on the east coast. Where there is a will, there definitely is a way. And history lesson is over :D

Great post. I agree. Hate breeds hate. Those that are not satisfied with their own situation seek to bring down others through their animosity. Thank you for this insight.
